Hello new and old members of BYC!!!,
This is GamerX here too tell you everything you need to know about getting chicks and BYC. To start with BYC is the great tabs that you can access just by a click such as breeds and coops even a learning center. The learning center is pretty self explanatory but so much fun to go through.
Coops can tell you of different designs and different techniques on how to build the coop a great start to a newbie in terms of chicken coops.
The Breeds tab is my favorite because it tells you all about any breed you want and will show you how it looks and is personality. It will also give a rating and a percentage of how many good reviews this breed has on their page.
Now when you get new chicks, and I mean newborn or 1-3 day old chicks, they will have to be under a heat lamp or their mother hen if you so choose to breed. This will be for 4-5 weeks or a month time. after wards if they are not already in a big cage, as chicks who are bought will sometimes be in a giant metal barrel or giant box of some sort, will need to be moved to a bigger pen or a coop that has been lined a an escape proof barrier such as chicken wire as they will be much bigger. But as they are in their first home for a little bit, they will start to grow and produce feathers. when this happens you can say goodbye to your little fluff balls you had when they were fresh out of the egg.
One of the first things that you will see in your baby chicks is a personality and they wont be the same ones. Some will be shyer and some will be more courageous and some will be curious and some will be more like a stereotypical chicken. But the great thing about the personalities is that they still have the ability to make friends. They can make a friend and that friend can be you! Some will warm up to you and some might not like you. that's normal. I have five 2 month old chicks at my home, five of them, and three will walk up to me no problem and one will stand there and let me pet her. but that's a story for another day if you want to read more check out my other thread, " Friends With Chickens" That will come out tomorrow. Thanks so much fore checking out my thread a see you all on BYC!
