Unbelievably great resource you have here. Everything we needed to know and then some to get started with a small batch of hens.

My Grandparents used to have vegetables, fruit trees, grapes for wine, rabbits, and chickens when I was a child. I have always wanted to follow in their footsteps and now that my wife has full blown chicken fever I get to. This means I will be building a chicken coop out of some jobsite leftovers soon (Im a General Contractor). I will be gathering as many ideas on here as possible, and man there are a lot, then posting some picks of our coop throughout its process.

My wife is Swedish so she really wants a few Swedish Flower hens and I like the Cream Legbars. Our two boys are excited too and our youngest (5yr old) has as green a thumb as anyone I have ever met. His vegetable garden and pumpkin patch are amazing. He has been on top of it all summer, checking for new growth and bugs every morning.

So glad the city changed the laws regarding livestock within the city limits this year!

Thanks for such a great site. Look forward to getting started.

Welcome (from a SD neighbor). BTW, BYC'er Phage sells both Swedish Flowers and Cream Legbars. She's in Del Mar or thereabouts. She posts to SD Craigslist. At some future point I'll have Cream Legbar chicks, but mine aren't laying yet.

LAfreewayChickens thanks for the info!

Cant wait to build a coop and gather some hens. Surfed the free section on Craigslist and found several things I will be using to construct the coop. Might get started with it this weekend.
