We put our chicken run on an old sand box. Is that ok or do they need to be on dirt/grass?

Half my run is sand. Controls pests like flies well. Just odd to kitty litter scoop out a run

Pretty small space for 5(?) birds.
Would be better if you raised the coop up off the ground 12-18".

Sand not great for odor control.
My runs have semi-deep litter(cold composting), never clean anything out, just add smaller dry materials on occasion, add larger wood chippings as needed.
Aged ramial wood chippings are best IMO.

Ok thank you we will be getting a new coop and run soon that is bigger

Could you put the coop outside the run and attach it to the run secure they would have more space then? As the coop wouldn't be "inside" taking floor space up.

That could help, though you may still have a few too many birds for the size of set up. Do you have measurements for the run?
