Sand floor in goat shed/barn?

I have a question...when yall are saying pallets and straw for a "bed", how do you set this up. Do you just put enough straw to keep them from falling through the pallet and hurting a leg? I'm truly interested. Please explain.

I take one pallet apart and use the boards to make the other pallets solid. They still have small spaces between the boards for urine to run through. I don't leave open spaces for fear that a goat will twist a leg.
