sand for quail?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has tried to use sand from their yard for their quail? I live in the desert and we have tons of sand here. I just don't know what I'd have to do with it to prepare it for quails to use? Does anyone have any ideas?

you can get the 'All Purpose' sand in the garden center at Lowes (Item #: 104898), it's a 50# bag and about a buck a bag cheaper then play sand.
