Sand from the creek?

We want to use sand in our run and my grandma owns property with a creek on it. Is there any reason we can’t use that sand? Would we need to do anything to it first? My husband thinks it would be fine but I wanted to ask first since I’ve seen “washed” river sand recommended.

I would not.
Not good for the creek.....and probably not so good for the chickens.
Who knows what you might bring up with the sand, and even if it's pure sand.
The term 'river sand' is subjective and most likely colloquial.

Also sand is not the best run bedding, unless you live in the desert(very arid climate).

I agree with @aart

Digging the creek bed would cause ecological damage, could potentially bring in unknown contaminants, and may not even be legal because wetlands are often protected by environmental laws.

Is there a particular reason that you want to use sand in your coop?
