Sand Hill Preservation Center

Many years ago I read that Sandhill was working on building a breeding flock of Nankin bantams. They of course weren't selling them at that time, but I wonder whether anyone knows whether they're selling Nankins now?

Beautifully put!!!

I think their poor communication is actually part of their screening process, culling out those too impatient to be good breed preservationists. :)

I originally placed an order in 2012 and had a targeted ship date (received confirmation within a week), but d/t to difficulties (couldn't get coop built) had to delay my order until this year. They were quite pleasant (responded by email) and responsive and did not charge a cancellation/change order fee. When I had questions about Mareks, they responded the next day, recommending raising the chicks with a couple of turkeys. Considering I sometime get hundreds of work related emails daily, I envy being able to disregard emails for weeks. And don't get me started about answering phones. I admire them (and am considering getting some of the heirloom seeds and roots, although their discouraging description of raising sweet potatoes have discouraged me a bit on them (you can find so few heirloom varieties locally now.)

I checked out the online catalog today. They had just updated it 24Feb13 (I was curious to see what the trending breeds were this year), and a few breeds are sold out for 2013 and many into June/July. And it is not even March. Yes, I think they will be fine, despite their lack of a viable business model.

I have ordered from Sand Hill a couple of times but this year went with someone else. It's the unpredictability of when the chicks would arrive that made my decision. What if they show up and I'm not in town? Can you imagine? It's too bad, really, as I have always really liked my chicks and subsequent adults from them. If my life were more predictable, read I never went anywhere, I could swing it but not this year.

Well I recently put in my order for 25 birds to SHP. Despite all of the bad reviews regarding their customer service, which I'm sure aren't made up, I haven't heard anyone complain about their birds. I ordered 12 Buff Minorca's and 13 assorted Orpingtons. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Also, check out this forum post of some Minorcas ordered from SHP that are all grown up. Truly amazing looking birds!
