I have used sand in my coop for the past 3 years. I absolutely love it. I clean it every day which only takes a moment. I am adding new mason sand to bring it up to the 4 inch mark. Prior to adding the new sand should I spread the old sand with Sweet PDZ or DE?

I have wood floor in some of my coops so I don't use sand but do use shavings, but I have a lot of coops. I don't clean them out daily. The birds do track sand in from their pens especially after a rain. When I do clean out the coops it all goes into my compost pile. Good luck...

I don't think you need to sprinkle the old sand at all.

I do not use sand in coop or run, it doesn't work for me.

That said, I don't understand the point of sprinkling DE/PDZ on the old sand, then burying it. If its being added for control of mites, etc, burying it just ensures its less effective and more likely to be moist, which reduces its effectiveness further. If you are thinking your birds will scratch in the new sand and "turn up" the buried DE/PDZ (probably true, to some extent), how is that any different from putting DE/PDZ on top, and letting them turn it in???

Like I said, I don't do it - but as I think about it, that's what first comes to mind.
