Does anybody use sand in their coop?

I have about 6 tons in mine. Not many complaints about it. Keeps the bug factor way down. Mites are not an issue, flies are very few and far between.

In the winter I use shavings for warmth but for those that roost it seems rather a waste. For sweetening after cleaning I rake PDZ into the sand.

Mine is gonna be sand..... because thats what is there already!

I've got some sweetPDZ on the way to me in the mail - I'm not sure how much to use (if anyone can let me know!)

Here is a pic. My coop is still in progress, it used to be a shed full of junk - we just got the insulation up today and will nail up those pieces of wood you see in the pic.

I've got a small coop, that the chickens only sleep in. I was using shaving, but switched to sand. We scoop the poop like a cat litter box, and it works great. I'm not sure if it would we so wonderful in a wetter or colder climate.
