Sand in the coop/run?

Check with hardware/farm supply store newspaper flyers. Our local Farm and Fleet is selling playground sand for $2.00/50 pounds. (50 cents less than usual.)
It's ALWAYS been the cheapest and has been that price (around here) since the 1980's. A landscape company will charge a lot more.

IF you need more than a leetle tiny bit of sand, it is cheapest bought in bulk. Look in the yellow pages under "Aggregates" (gravel companies will give you the best price as long as it's not too far a delivery distance) or if all else fails call landscaping-materials suppliers (who usually charge a bit more).

Decide what depth you want, over what area, add at least 10-20% for spillage and loss and underestimation, and then just do the (very simple) math to figure out how many cubic yards or fractions thereof you need.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I got a half a yard of arena sand for a run of about 120 square feet and it seems to work well. The arena sand has a lot of pebbles mixed in it so it would work for grit as well. It absorbs water very well and tends to keep somewhat damp which keeps things cooler.

I actually didn't do much raking it out, I let the girls do it.
