sand in winter?

i live in wisconsin and was thinking about using sand instead of woodchips. does the sand help keep the chickens warm? sand does get real cold in the winter. so for you peeps in the snowy states, what are your thoughts on this?

My Faverolles have sand in the covered run and pine shavings in the coop, and seemed completely impervious to our Michigan winter. I did shovel snow out of the run 2 or 3 times, but only because they wanted to be outside all day, every day. The sand helps dry the droppings, and it is very easy to rake the run every week or two to remove the worst of the mess. I think it is a great choice.

in the summer, whenever i cut the grass, i put all the clippings in the run. so the sand would be useless in the run. and i never clean out the run. haven't needed too.

Sand in coops/run for Northern climates doesn't work well (at least in Winter)

Im also in WI. I use wood shavings in the coop and sand in the covered part of the run, They like to dust bath in it in the summer. I would also like to use sand in the coop, But the cold winters dont allow me to.
