Sand or Hay for bedding small wooden coop?

Pics
That just seems a bit extreme, but then you don't have a ton of freezing temps?

Wish you had a coop page.
I've posted pics before. I lost a bunch when the new format came to BYC and when my last computer fried.
I might turn the fan off when it gets below 0F.
It's going to be in the teens this week. It hit -19 a couple years ago. The big windows stayed wide open.

I don't know where the recommendation heard so often about ventilation without a draft originated but I assume it is from people that don't like it cold.
For me, if high winds can hit them so can horizontal rain and I have lost a bird that way when a single top hinged window on my coop wasn't shut during an unexpected storm. This is how far the window was open but it was enough to soak them:

There have been worse storms since but keeping the windows closed has kept them dry.

Thank you dears all for your comments and recommendations. They really helped me.
Yesterday I changed the bedding, from hay to construction sand including small gravels (tiny stones). They really liked it. And I made some small opening in the lower part of the coop (shown in the photos).
I know that my coop is small but that is only what I can do at home.

Respect to all
