Sand or Straw?

My full-sized full-grown chickens (breeds in my signature) can and do fly 4 feet up to my roosts, though they usually use the top of the nest box as a step. I expect your chickens will use that perch in front of the nest box to get to the roost.

Straw kills... Sand is the clear choice especially for the PNW
