We're still building our coop, but looking into where to find sand for the coop floor and the run. My question is, what type of sand? more coarse grains or fine? I've never bought sand before, so I don't know the difference between river sand, play sand, mason sand, etc..

Help!

I was thinking about this as well since i am going to make a new coop for my chickens and was wondering if beach sand would be acceptable cause i live in front of the beach. Since everyone who has a chicken near me(which is just about everyone lol) has never used sand for a chicken coop, hope fully i can learn more here :)

I used river sand from the landscape supply company where I do business. It has varied grain sizes. $30 a yard. Some recommend against using sharp sand, but I don't fully understand why. It would seem to me that any sand would serve the purpose we seek.

It would seem to me that beach sand would be prone to packing, but the chickens do dig a lot. So that may not be a problem.

You could try beach sand. If it is not what you want, you can place other sand over it and it will be mixed together over time.

I imagine that most want to use the correct sand because of the trouble to move and install a lot of sand rather than any concern for the correctness of the sand.
