sand vs grit

Can regular builders sand be used instead of grit for week old chicks. I have builders sand available but they have to order the grit.

I don't know if sand would work for baby chicks, but where I live it is mostly sandy soil and my free-rangers don't bother with the grit. In a pinch I've used the grit you get in a pet store for parakeets for babies and have had no problems.

OK. If need be I can get the parakeet grit stuff for a buck a box. I think I will go that route since these birds will br partially free range and won't need 50 lbs
