Sand Vs. what else for run?

I am also a new chicken momma and understand your concerns with "what to use in the run?" questions - I have mulled over the same questions/concerns and feel this is trial by error as we go along. We just finished our run (12X24) and have 14 chickens that are 11 weeks and 12 weeks (by 3 day difference). I bought the Chicks Dig It Premium Chicken Sand and used a ton of it. 120+ bags to be specific. I'm happy with it "so far" but it is a chore to clean the run every evening -- easier when I can do it in the morning and the evening if I'm honest. It has virtually no dust but then I did add some First Saturday Lime on top of it so now it is a tad dusty but nothing major. Sifts easily and since our run is covered, it has been a blessing in this heat wave we are in. There is a 10 degree difference in the run vs the yard thanks to the shade/sand combination.

We will be adding gutters to the run once we get the coop itself finished and I'm hoping that will help us keep the sand dry - it currently gets wet from the rain splashing off the roof and onto the ground - but it does not clump or become hard and I will say it dries quickly...gutters will be more helpful once we get in the colder temps I'm sure. Plus we will be putting in a few "tree limbs" for the birds to perch on in the cooler weather and will be wrapping the run as well when we get closer to the steady cool temps.

The only thing that we did that I am starting to regret was putting in the "fodder boxes" - they are covered with hardware cloth so we can grow alfalfa, oats, wheatgrass and marigolds but they cannot deroot everything. But man do they smell terrible because they poop on the top of the screen and I can only wash it down through the HW cloth since I can't scoop it off. So those might be coming out in the near future. We will see.

I have such mixed feelings about this stuff. We use it in a 3x3 sand box in our mulched run and in our 3x8 basement brooder (that's also used as an extreme weather coop). Clean up is super easy and it's very low dust. But the price, man... they're killing me. I'm ready to start picking granules off the poops before removing them.

Also, I'm surprised yours doesn't clump, because mine definitely will if they spill some water.

Was happy to see a review from someone that uses it large-scale though, and I'm glad it's working out for you. 👍

Oh the first 56 bags were bought on Amazon but now I am able to get it from Bomgaar's which is so much cheaper ($10.99/bag vs $21.99 a bag from Amazon which seems to just increase each time I look at Amazon).

GET OUT! Did you ask them to order it in? I might have to start pestering my local farm supply.
No, I emailed Gulf Coast Sands and they called me back to tell me that Bomgaar's was getting it in their stores to try it on a retail level. The manager at our Bomgaar's was not a very pleasant person at all and was shocked when I finally called him back and told him "I don't know if you have gotten yours in yet but I know you should be getting it in this week" - his tune changed needless to say.

I checked and sadly the closest place to you is OH. It might be worth talking to your farm store or even contacting Gulf Coast Sands directly. They were really helpful when I was trying to find it.

For fun here is a picture of our run with the sand. Mind you we are still working on our coop so our birds are in the run -- lots of ventilation and totally secure. This quickly became a monster of a project! Hubby is working on the feeder hopper now because when he starts the coop he will not be able to reach it as easily. That is why you see the plywood in the back where the coop will be - it is covering the feeder ports while the caulk dries. Once that is finished today, then the actual coop is next. We are just not in a safe place to allow free ranging with the road so close to us.
