Sand vs ?

How large, in feet by feet. Pics would be great.

What you bed your coop floor with depends on how you plan to manage manure.
This is about 'cleaning' but covers the big picture:
-I use poop boards under roosts with thin(<1/2") layer of sand/PDZ mix, sifted daily(takes 5-10mins) into bucket going to friends compost.

-Scrape big or wet poops off roost and ramps as needed.

-Pine shavings on coop floor, add some occasionally, totally changed out once or twice a year, old shavings added to run.

-Runs have semi-deep litter, never clean anything out, just add smaller dry materials on occasion, add larger wood chippings as needed.

-Nests are bedded with straw, add some occasionally, change out if needed(broken egg).

There is no odor, unless a fresh cecal has been dropped and when I open the bucket to add more poop.

That's how I keep it 'clean', have not found any reason to clean 'deeper' in 5 years.
I’ve posted photos in prior posts. 15x 18 inside coop. Still working on putting up roosts and nest boxes. I’m going to separate the coop (easily done) for my intended flocks.
Once it’s all finished the way I intend I’ll post another photo.
I may just go with pdz and shavings.

Yes. That’s the coop. It’s 15x18.
I think I’m going to stick with poop boards under the roosts...
wood chips in the run... pdz and sand on the poop boards and sawdust on the wood floor

I’m going to work on my roosts and nest boxes this week so I’ll post photos of progress. I have to clean out the 4x8 (maybe 3? But it’s a normal door so I think it’s 4) storage area... I’ve determined they actually used it for a flock and now I’m thinking I’ll use it for my silkies. They threw all the chicken fencing in there so it’s stacked 4 feet high with that. There’s no light in it either... and the window has no hardware cloth over it- I will fix that Friday.

But I am going to lose about a 4x4 area because there is a gate I can close so when I walk in the coop (I plan to run wire up to ceiling as well to keep the fids from flying over to door or roosting on gate) so I can store my feed there at entrance.

Wouldn’t I need to cover it? I guess that’s a silly question... I just wouldn’t want it to be wet when I put it in the coop... I also am not sure I have a place I could drop a load of sand... My 14 acres is very much devoted to horse and all things horse projects lol
Just get a scoop at a time in the back of your pickup. Took me a couple hours to shovel it into a wheelbarrow and dump it roughly fifty feet from the driveway.
And I am a balding potbellied crippled up old man with no good legs.
