What kind of sand? Benifets of sand and any problems?

We use road sand in our turkey shed, we scoop poop daily, so always clean since the turkeys only come in the shed to roost, but it's a bit cold in the winter, so we don't use it for chickens who spend more time inside and on the floor. Gets damp in spring and fall which makes it harder to sift, easy in the winter because poop is frozen.
