SandHill Preservation review

Hi everyone
I send my order for chicks today. It seems like you guys have trouble with Sand Hill. I hope it will work out for you. I was impress with their list of breeds. Some of breeds I could not find anywhere. Unfortunately, they did not have one breed (La Fleche) do to predator. I place order for blue Orpington and Crevecoeurs.

And their defense, they sure do try with a lot of endangered breeds! I hope people take this to heart on consider donating eggs to them to help increase the gene pool of low number breeds. I know this sounds counter to trying to develop your own breeding program, but diversification of genes is what helps a breed survive!

Donate? Eggs to them. Ha ha, not a chance after how they treated me.
As far as their list , how many breeds they offer and the whole endangered thing thats all well and good if those breeds were actually available.
I had to change my order a few times because nothing ever seemed available. Ended up with a couple breeds I really didn't need just to finally get anything. Last order was cancelled by them for lack of breeds and still haven't received my refund in well over a year.
If they're worried about breed survival maybe they could address their predator issues. They've been using predators wiping out their stock for over two years now.
IMO they're a joke and the jokes on many of their customers.
End of rant.

Sandhill called me today and my chicks are on their way!

@h2oratt Did you ever get your order or did you end up cancelling?

Funny thing is, in the spring we were talking about cold being a possible problem with USPS. Now I'm keeping an eagle eye on the heat. Supposed to be 93 in some places today and tomorrow. I hope they don't leave the box sitting out anywhere hot.

Yes I got my chicks but not what I wanted. I wanted blue orps but I said I would sub for anything blue or barred. That was a mistake. I got a 15 blue jersey giants. Who knew those come in blue. I also got them one if the weeks they had scratched out on the order sheet. Very strange.

What did you get? Did you get what you wanted?

They got here already!

Normally when I get chicks shipped, it's two nights minimum, and they get to my PO about 4am of the second night. But they called me at 6:30 this evening and said they were in! I had to scramble, because I was planning to get the brooder set up after dinner. (Still haven't eaten.)

I did get what I really wanted, but not the 5 extras I ordered to make up the 25 minimum. The invoice says refund to follow.

I think it makes a big difference in how you list substitutions. So I really wanted Redcaps and Mille Fleur Leghorns and those are the only reason I placed an order. I would have had them cancel the order if they couldn't fill it. So for the Redcaps, I said NO Subs. For the MFL, I said NO Subs. For the other two breeds I picked, I said sub any breed, but especially more Redcaps if they had extra hatch out. And on their confirmation letter that they sent me, they wrote it as Sub Redcaps or any. :thumbsup

It worked out that I got all 10 of my leghorns, and one extra redcap (ordered 10 and got 11), and only short 4 birds in total. I don't care about the 3 Orloffs and 2 rose comb red dorkings, although they would have been fun to have. At least this way I have 4 fewer chickens to deal with math about.

My experience with them was less then ideal. We ordered 3 speckled Sussex and got 6 (along with the other birds), which was great because we love that breed. But we also got 4 old muffled old English game as filler which we didn't order or have on the form so we had to research how to keep them and found out they're highly aggressive...which means they could never be kept with the other chickens. On top of that of the 6 SS we got, 3 died within 2 days. Just wouldn't eat or anything. I think next time I order I'll do it through Meyer again

I do appreciate sandhill trying to keep some heritage genes around but it is too hard for me to order. You never know when you will get them or what you will get.
