My hen hatched out one chick so I got a few more to go with her. Got one sapphire sky chick from tsc. The sign said pullets. The lady said oh if I hold a chick upside down and they fight to get upright that’s girl and see these wing feathers that’s girl. I said yes another girl here told me that two years ago and I ended up with a rooster. Well history has repeated itself I’m afraid. This one has a dot on the head but when I called up there they said half of them also had that dot.

This one is built like a girl but stands upright with chest out and has a rooster face (you guys know what I mean). To me the chest out and standing upright is the first sign of a rooster. But he’s also getting feathers in and there’s barring. He’s only about 10 days old so not much to go on yet. Thoughts??

If it was a Sapphire Gem I would say it's a definite cockerel, but I could find nothing about Sapphire Sky chickens being sex linked with the barring gene on any website that sells them. So they may not be sex links, in which case you could have either a male or a female. That means you would have to wait until later to tell gender, and judge by comb starting at 6 weeks or so.

The thing about holding a chick upside down is pure rubbish. Behavior and stance aren't good standards to judge by, either, when they are babies.

Thank you both! You’ve given me hope. The other baby I got was injured and I purposely took her in. The others were pecking her leg. She’s doing so well under a mama hen so far (knock on wood) but I’ll have to pen this one if a rooster Bc this little girl can’t be bred ever. Thanks again
