Saved from a hawk attack!

I lost my only araucana cockerel - just 17 weeks old - on Sunday to a hawk. My husband saw it, but was too late to save Casper. I'm so glad you didn't lose your chicken.

Wow, another Pro point for those big, ole, fluffy butts!! Hawk cushion!

Glad she's ok. I had set my Quaker Parakeet's cage in front of my shop room window. One day, I heard this thud, like someone was pounding on the window...three times! It was a Red Tail Hawk, trying to get to the birds, in a cage, IN the house! Brazen little buggers they are! Please know, he will be back, so be on guard, and give the chooks some hiding places!

Ive seen more deer this year than in the past 15. I think its just cause they have to get closer to get a the water trough like you said. I was using a sprinkler during the worst part of the drought and the deer would flock to the spots where I watered cause that was the only place around grass was actually growing

I even had a doe with triplets make regular visits, I was worried about her with so many babys but they are still doing good and growing up nicely.

i had a hawk try and get my silkie boy but thank goodness he did not see me standing under a large tree when i saw him come in for the kill i start to run for my silkie yelling and waving my arm like a mad woman it scared the crap out of the hawk and my silkie lol:lol:

When you get a chance, you might want to check your buff closely. I had a hawk attack my marans hen, I ran out the door, he flew off, she ran off. That night, when she went to roost I brought her inside. She had a large (about the size of a quarter) nasty puncture wound behind her wing & a smaller one on the front of her leg. She never went off her feed or water, never even slowed down laying, & feathers covered the wounds, so no picking by others. But, you might want to check & doctor on her if needed. Good luck w/ your girl, & do keep an eye out. As a neighbor said, once a hawk discovers the chicken buffet, he'll be back--easier to catch & much more filling than mice, squirrels & rabbits.

Miss Big Bird is doing really well and has fully recovered. Unfortunately we had another attempted hawk attack today. I just happened to glance out the window whilst doing dishes and saw the flash of a hawk streak by. We have a huge deck with varied elevation that they use for cover. Thank goodness they got to safety in time. I ran out hollering and as soon as I got there, a huge flock of crows showed up and sent that hawk packing. I know it's a matter of time until the hawk returns again. Despite having tons of hiding places for them I am not sure if I can continue to free range them. That really upsets me.

I didn't get chickens to lock them away in a coop/run. But I also didn't get them to feed the hawks.
