Hello everyone!

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this post, so hopefully I'm not in the wrong place. I just wanted to share my story and get you guys's input on it too!

Today, after a particuarly rough storm that blew through my area, my father took a walk outside to check on the chickens in the coop after it calmed down. On the way down though, he noticed a little bird wobbling and falling in the very center of the yard, a little ways away from any shelter or trees. The poor thing was shivering and just drenched.

He brought it up to me quickly and I took the poor baby and assembled a little space for it, in the large tin bucket I kept my chicks in during chick season! I put some warm bedding in that I use for the chickens, and even took the spare heat lamp I had on hand too (Such a relief to literally have everything on hand, good thing I'm in this bird business! Haha!) I made a makeshift holder for his bird food and a little holder for water.

The heat lamp, he loved! And soon after he was all fluffed up and moving around, warm and alert and exploring! And inquisitive little fella he is! He could hear the owl hollering outside the screened garage door and he would try to huddle up under the bedding to hide. He has nothing broken fortunately, and sees to be rather comfortable! I'm so glad! I'm thinking he may be a sparrow breed, perhaps a juvenile slate colored Fox Sparrow, but I can't be for certain, as I'm not too smart in the song bird categories!

I couldn't let him back out after he dried, because right after the storm it was nightfall, and colder, and wet. Plus, a group of owls were hooting and hollering and circling the area after my dad had taken the baby. And, I wanted him to gain some more strength and recover.

My only worry is letting him go tomorrow when its warm and sunny. I read that fledglings are still usually dependent on their parents, to feed them. Although this little fella is fully feathered and able to fly from what I've seen, I still don't want him to starve?? I know I probably have no choice but to let him go, because I want whats best for him, and a lot of birdies raise their young and stick around our backyard and relative area, so perhaps if he is still dependent, then maybe they'll find each other again??

What do you guys think?

I just wanted to share my story and get you guys's input! Thank you for reading, I'll attach some pictures of the little baby!

This was right after finding him! He was dripping

This is him just after I got him in his little makeshift home.

Recovered, warm, fluffy and enjoying his food!! ... By sitting in it.

Here is a picture of a Juvenile Slate Fox Sparrow I found a picture of, I think there is a decent resemblance, right?

P.S Oh yeah! And I got a top for him so I won't wake up to him flying around the garage frantically in the morning!

So glad I was able to save him though!! I nicknamed him Jack.. the Sparrow.

Yep! I did that just this morning, he was so full of life when I let him out, and he fly right up into one of the tall pine trees and started singing. I'm so glad I was able to save him, and glad I didn't touch him any more than necessary. The baby is saved :)

Thanks for the input, I'm glad I did the right thing! I think I even saw him come back a few hours later and hop around the bottom of the bird feeders around the house :)

Hi, I think this is a Mourning Dove. Here is a pic of a juvenile in front of an adult at my house.
Note the pale feather edged on the back and the gnarly bill.

Definitely a mourning dove I actually saved a baby who looked just like yours and jjjjj's. Crooked beak with same pattern. Okay, so here's the thing. You did the right thing bringing that baby in in the rain, but if your ever find them just sitting on the ground, let them be. They are not abandoned. The parents push them to the ground when they become to big than feed them there. They can still fly enough to get away from predators, but are not yet mature. After we got ours to good health, we released him. We named him Jace. In fact, if you check, the thread asking for help with him is still there. He was a cute little bugger, resembled yours exactly! Kudos for helping the bird, he is beautiful!
