Saving Money

If you are interested in growing your own insects/grubs/protein sources, you can also look into black soldier fly composting - it works at somewhat warmer temperatures than the typical earthworm composting, and may be more suited to your climate - or not.

I gave it a try last year, and sadly, my climate (and bin location) ended up still being too hot - but I'm trying again this year in a more shaded location.

Like you, my birds also free range (I have half your number, but larger birds, including Pekin ducks) and a similar rate of feed consumption, about 100# per month.

Day off today, so ran some errands - 200 lbs of layer pellet and a “rest of the truck full” of supplemental food.

chicken feed cost $59.88

other stuff was free with “thanks for taking that” and a big bag of egg cartons. :D
