So my barred rock has started making a crowing sound each morning and my Rhode Island Red is developing green tail feathers. Both are clear signs of not being the laying hen they were supposed to be. I'd keep them if I could but I live in a residential neighborhood and cannot have roosters. So this makes me 1 for 4 in selecting my first hens. Am I the only one who can't seem to get it right? I get attached quickly since these are my first chickens but they have to find a new home. Anybody in the dfw area want some roosters? :)

Aww! That sucks! :((

Ironically out of my first batch of chickens, my Barred Rock (Dahlia) and Rhode Island Red (Roan) ended up being roosters as well. Small world!

But I figured it out when they were at about 7-8 weeks- Roan was already getting the green feathers in, big comb, roo-stance...

Dahlia had a huge red comb, light feathers (roos are more gray/white and the hens are black/white), and definitely had that roo-stance.

I felt awful, I cried when I left them at the farm (I took him back to the breeder and took home a Barred Rock hen in return.. and an ISA Brown but we took her back because she wasn't good for our flock). I still feel bad about my boys but what can y'do? And I love my BR hen, Berzillia. She's awesome.

Good luck in finding your boys a home!

Here's a picture of my chickens. You can see the two roosters in the back
