Hi everyone, We have 1 Muscovy drake and three ducks. This is our newest addition, Mabel. She is three weeks old and has settled in unbelievably well. She is completely intrepid and follows the others lead in whatever they are doing. We allow her a short swim with the other females but, from today, I am drying her off a little as the weather has dropped quite a few degrees and she is obviously not fully water-proofed yet. We got our first Muscovies back in June and raised them by hand to become very loving and friendly ducks. This website has proved an absolute god send to us especially as neither of us had owned ducks before. Our learning curve has been very, very steep but you will never know how much help you have all given us. We look forward to continuing to read your posts and articles and posting our own questions when we have them. We are based in the North of the Algarve in Portugal. Many thanks.

The more she swims the more the oil glad is stimulated to produce oil..Down becomes water proof too..That's how wild Ducklings survive out with their Mommas on ponds and lakes..Let it swim and then preen daily...

Hello:frow
Welcome to BYC!!!
Thank you for sharing your story and your photos of Mabel!! She is so cute!!!
Hope you find everyrhing you need on here.
Lots of information for any quiestions you may have.

She certainly is sweet. She has spent all afternoon stomping around eating really big ants. Two of the bigger ducks, (about 6 months old), never having showed a sign of eating ants before, copied her. It was very funny watching her teaching the older ones. She chatters and squeaks the whole time - even when eating. She has quickly become used to being handled and eats out of our hands happily. She is a great addition to Aggie, Trevor and Puddle.
