Hello all.
I'm a brand new backyard chicken keeper living in the Tacoma, WA area.
My family is one of the many who decided to keep chickens during the ongoing pandemic. I had thought about getting them before, but decided against it because I wasn't sure I could handle the extra responsibility on top of all the other stuff I was doing. But when the pandemic hit there was talk of food shortages and my kindergartner ended up at home full time, and keeping chickens seemed like a family-friendly project as well as a good way to have a backyard food source. Though I'm totally new to keeping birds, I grew up around horses and at least know how much work livestock can be.
We have one Buff Orpington and one Barred Rock, named Fluffy and Eggs, respectively. (My 6yo named them). They were sent to us by a hatchery as 15 week pullets and are now around 20 weeks old. Here's a pic:
Fluffy ended up being the top chicken and bosses Eggs around, haha. But otherwise they get along well and snuggle together a lot. Since we got them as older pullets they aren't super into being handled, but I have managed to pet them on the back or the side occasionally and they are very comfortable with me and 6yo hanging out in their run with them and they always come up to us to hang out or shake us down for treats. I love how social and talkative they are.
By occupation I am a writer, and my hobbies outside of chicken keeping are watching Korean Dramas and learning languages.
I'm excited to get to know people in the Backyard Chickens community and learn more about everyone's birds (as well as my own)!
