Been looking at getting some chickens in the near future but wanted to do my research first and get everything setup before getting my first chicks. I have a unused barn my property that I am considering using part of for shelter and nesting for my future yard birds. Any suggestions on converting my selected area of the barn and setup would be appreciated. Bill

Hi Bill, first thing you should do is head for the "Raising Backyard Chickens," forum and scroll down the menu to "Coop and run design & construction. That will fill you in on what chickens need for their coop area - most important is draft free quarters with good ventilation. The Learning Center is also a great read. Be sure and predator proof your coop/run using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire as too many predators can tear through chicken wire, or squeeze through the openings in the mesh. Good morning and welcome to BYC!

We built our coop within an existing shed (almost mini-house size...previous owner's father lived in it). With the proper modifications, such as hardware cloth, adding a pop door, etc.), it's made a great coop for our mixed flock. We can use the open part of the shed for feed and such and it has 2 secure doors that can be locked. We built an attached large covered run for their outdoor use. Protection for the birds is very important because there are so many things out there that would love to make a meal out of them.
