I picked up my chicken today to check her and she had blood on her feathers. I checked her vent and right under the vent (the actual vent looks fine) it was scabby and bloody. THere were also quite a few mites crawling around. In the run I've been seeing a lot of feathers from that chicken. Could she be plucking her own feathers or are the other chickens doing it to her? Are the scabs from the mites or pecking? I'm really not sure what to do because we're leaving for vacation in 2 days. Please Help!

We're going on vacation day after tomorrow and having a neighbor watch our chickens. I dont think my neighbors want a chicken in their house

. I thought about blocking off a corner of the coop for our hurt chicken but our coop is way too small.
Thanks

Mites can cause scabby bloody vent. Treat the mites! Poultry protector spray is non-toxic and can be used daily. I wash off the worst of the mite egg accumulation, blow dry, and then treat with sevin dust. Still fighting them, since I can't do a really good job in winter. Come summer, it's baths for all, SERIOUS henhouse cleaning and spraying every week, and dusting! Read up on mites on this website. Happy vacation!

Treat her before you go, clean out and dust the house and shavings. She'll still have mites when you come back, but you will have decreased the numbers, and that's a good thing.
