My 3 year old production red chicken was standing next to me and I noticed one of her foots looked extremely weird. The scales were uplifted and it honestly looked a little swollen. Any ideas what this is? I saw chickens infected with scaley leg mites and it looked pretty similar but it’s only on one leg?

That is indeed scaly leg mites, and she has a milder case on her right leg. Treatment is putting some Nustock cream (has sulfur in it to kill the mites,) castor oil, or vaseline on the legs rubbing it up into the scales twice a week until the scales begin to grow back normally. Does she have any swelling in either of her hocks?

Is the hock the upper part of the leg? Correct me if I’m wrong but if thats it then no It’s just her foot. When you say the scales will grow back will they just fall off? And how long should I do treatment since it’s not really obvious when the mites have been smothered since her scales will take a while to heal or so I’m assuming

It can take weeks for the scales to get more normal looking. The lifted scales will be shed, then new skin grows. I would continue the treatment for at least 6 weeks. Look at other birds to see if any are developing the lifted scales. The chicken’s hocks are the joint between the tibia and metatarsal bones.

If their hocks are swollen, what does that indicate? I'm treating for those mites as well, but she still seems uncomfortable walking around

If a chicken has swollen ankles and hocks, that cannbe a sign of bacterial (or viral) arthritis, caused by mycoplasma or other organism.
