scaley leg mites

Ok, I have tried, I think, almost every thing to rid my coop and chickens of scaley leg mites.

I have heard of painting the roosts with burned motor oil, what the heck is that and why won't motor oil out of the jug work?

Any other remedies or store bought medications THAT WORK please forward them on to me.

I have 29 hens and about half are affected, the other half absoulutely no signs, go figure.

Baby oil, vaseline, bag balm, diaper cream, etc... The idea is to smother them.

I have had chickens for over 40 years and have never had this issue, it started last summer and I know it is from those darn starlings I was screaming about on the pest board.

Beside the vaseline which i have done to nausium don't you have to treat the coop?

I have replaced the roost twice also.

you can paint the perches with creosote, the legs, soak them in warm water, remove as much crust as possible (there will be slight bleeding), then soak them in cooking oil, re-apply every 3-4 days for half a dozen times..... by the time they finish moulting the legs should look decent.

I havew found that vaseline works really well and have only needed one application. I really slathered it on and the legs were 100% better almost immediately. I have not treated the roosts.

I had the best luck taking a full tube of generic ivomectrin horse wormer paste (about $5) and mixing it 50:50 with vaseline and then coating the legs. I only had to do a few birds so you may be able to make it 25:75 or even less. hope that helps.

Are leg mites related to skin mites?

All of a sudden, all my birds have leg mites. I've had chickens for years and never seen this before, so I treated with petroleum jelly. If they have leg mites, do they probably have skin mites as well? Thanks for your help.
