Scaley Mites - Toe at Risk !

Ok,

To All This May Concern:

At first, I thought "Rocky" 1- 1/2 yr old Barred Rock hen just had mud or poop on her foot or maybe a plum had stuck to her. I ignored it.
My husband tended the chickens the next day then when it was still there yesterday.
I soaked her legs again, then, Slathered them in flea soap. Waited @ 5 min. and rinsed them off. Put triple antibiotic salve around the toe.

Then last night, I covered her feet & legs with Corona All Purpose Ointment from TS.

I didn't realize or imagine that this was the Scaley Mites that I had been treating her for !
I hadn't been feeling well & cut back, thinking I had gotten them. The affected toe appears to have had it's circulation cut off.

This thing is some what loose but oozes and the toe underneath is quite a bit smaller & irritated.
I can't get this thing off !
What do I do ?

In the second photo, what is that dark looking blob on the toe?

I think that you have waited for to long!
If that blob is what remains from the toe, it could be gangrene Caused by some clostridium, Streptococcus or Stafilococus bacteria. This situation is a Life-threatening for the chicken, I think that the toe should go off! If not your chicken will day from sepsis!

By the pictures, I just cannot tell whether the growth could be removed without amputating the toe. Just so you know, a chicken can live a perfectly healthy life without a toe. I won't tell you what I would do since it requires sterile, sharp instruments, blood stop powder, a clean environment to heal, and daily bandage changing. Leaving an infected area to exist eventually travels through the bird's body, so you may want to take the bird to a decent vet who is willing to amputate the toe if necessary.

The "blob" is the hard mass covering the top & sides of her toe.
I thought that it might be an accumulation of mud & fecal matter that it may soften with the soaks.
What happened was the scales & feet did soften BUT it loosen the "blob" to where when it moved it bleed.

I let her soak yesterday and gently tried to clean away remaining salve & yuck from under lifted scales. But, no scales have yet fallen off.
This exposed area under the "blob" covering the top of her toe. It was "Icky, Smelly, Red, Irritated and would bleed if the "blob" moved much.
There were also either maggots ? or some sort of white granular objects - not moving coming out when I irrigated the open area.)
(The bottom of that toe & nail appears normal except that it has curved the toe.)

Nikki,

I see a moderate scaley leg mite problem, but the lump is definitely not just from that.


It seems like a good chance it may be a tumor if it developed over several weeks.

The only thing that comes to mind if it happened in a few days is a hematoma, but I don't know if that's how one would look on a bird's foot??
Or maybe an infection from injury with a foreign object?

Yes, of course I will !
At this time she seems to be doing better.

• I have continued the daily soaks.
• I put Neosporin under the loosing mass on her since the toe is irritated & yucky.
• I have put Corona Multi-Purpose salve on feet & legs which loosen scales.
• Yesterday, I put Peperzine in her soak water & poured water over her feathers to get to the mites. Yes, they are "tiny" but - Man Oh Man was there LOTS in the water when I took her out. She got a rinse and I let her rest.
• Later, we put her on the ground. She scratched & fluffed like a "CRAZY WOMAN"
• At bed time, I cleaned her feet & legs again, put on the Neosporin and her slathered with Corona Multi-Purpose salve again.
• PS- I have her on antibiotics in her water

Busy this AM, but will get more pics.
