When any of my birds have had scaley legs (not necessarily scaley leg mite, but presenting as scaley and dry, scales kind of lifting, not sure if bugs involved or not ) I've used Bagbalm with amazing results. Hen Betty's legs (RIP sweet Betty, died of unrelated problem) were so yukky at one point that they were bleeding and the scales were falling off (this happened pretty quickly). With Bagbalm her legs and all the scales completely regenerated and she looked like she had the legs of a newbie. She felt so much better! She was downright happy after a few days of Bagbalm. Right now my at-least- 7-year-old roo has areas on top of his feet near the intersection of toes that are looking weird in a couple of spots - almost like extra stuff has grown or something - scales lifting or something - can't quite tell what I'm looking at - so I've started using Bagbalm and there is regeneration in progress.

It's wonderful to hear of the other nifty treatments too!

I rescued a pullet not too long ago with horrible scaley leg mites. I was devastated at the fact she might pass it to all my other birds and didn't want to use something that would contaminate eggs. So I did ALOT of research and came up with my own treatment. I was really surprised at how easy it was to get rid of a horrible case and protect my birds.
First I took out all the hay straw (mites can live in it) and replaced it with Timothy Hay.
Then I took the badly infected bird and gave her a bath in an herbal flea shampoo. This does a few things...softens the scales and loosens debree, kills the mites and treats the poor irritated skin.
Then after she was dry I put Campho-Phenique on her feet. I also treated all the other birds. The Campho can be put in a small sray bottle. Very easy!! I resprayed everyone in about 10 days.
She is completely healed and no more mites!!

Ivermectin, injectable, 2 cc's mixed in One Gallon of
water, for 3 days. Then again in 2 weeks. This gets rid of all critters and worms!!

Ivermectin injectable is not a very effective wormer for roundworms and cecal worms. and it only kills mites that are blood feeders, It does nothing for the lice and mites that feed on feathers and dry skin..

I have never had scaley leg mites, but when I go to shows I lube up my birds shanks and feet with tea tree oil. I love the smell of it. It conditions the legs and repels bugs.

I urge people not to use WD-40 on their birds. I get it on my hands and it burns my skin, I'm sure its not good for them. I used Pam on some birds i got and about after 3 treatments the mite is gone. It has not spread to any other birds. It does not affect the feather at all, they clean it off. And its not bad for them.
