Hi BYC community! So I am hoping to get some clarification on how often to treat scaly leg mites in order to break the lifecycle. I have been doing tons of research and finding conflicting information. Some say to treat every day, others say that is too often.. every 5 days, every 7 days... does anyone know what the best treatment regimen is? One of my girls has is really bad and I am treating the whole flock to be safe. Any info is much appreciated!!! Thank you!!

I treat with Veggie oil which I spray on. I treat them every two weeks for a month or two, and then I treat them every few months to keep the mites from coming back. I also paint my roosts with veggie oil to kill any mites that might be infecting them. It won't hurt them to apply the oil more often though.

Thanks! It seems like my one girls leg scales come back up after a couple days so I wasn't sure if that was a sign that treatment was not working or they were coming back...

What kind of oil are you using? It takes a while for the scales to heal. Some times you won't notice a lot of improvement for a few weeks.
This has been going on for about 6 months. I started with coconut oil, that didn't seem to work so I switched to veg oil with tea tree. It seemed to be getting a little better. Then a few weeks ago (we were out of town and came home to) our girl that had the worst leg mites had a prolapsed vent, vent gleet, and her scales were vertical with feet bright red and she was chewing on her feet. I concentrated on the vent issues which now are under control. For her legs I switched to mineral oil with Vaseline and dusting with DE. It looked so bad I was tempted to try gasoline or motor oil but just can't do that knowing how toxic it is and how painful her feets looked. I prefer to stick with non toxic but was so worried about her with all of the stress related vent issues. It was a mess but she is way better now.. I just know the leg mites can be stressful for them too.
