Scaly Leg Mite question:

I used cooking spray (Pam) with good results also, but yeah, it takes a while for new leg scales to grow.

A little off subject but I wonder how the bird felt about having cooking spray put on it.

Like it was being prepped for the frying pan maybe

Lol, if I were a chicken I would be a little nervous about that. Especially if you used one of the flavored ones. Hehe.

On a serious note, I had a roo not too long ago that had a serious mite problem on his legs. I cleaned his legs daily with dawn dish soap and a toothbrush and then rubbed a thick layer of vaseline over his legs. Making sure to squish some under the scales. It took a little bit but it got rid of the mites.

It was just the legs, not the whole bird! He just stayed still, and it was a lot less messy than using vaseline given that this was a feather leg. Easy to get up under the leg scales. Vaseline made a big mess and I won't use Sevin because I have honeybees.

Make sure you do the leg dipping for 2 weeks.

I use mineral oil in a cup, dip each leg all the way up to the feather line. Every day to smother the mites...toward the end of the two weeks I am doing it every other day. It works well and the scales go back down. If severe, you might have to wait until the scales molt to see it go away but the bugs will be dead as someone said.

It is good to grease up the comb and wattles as well, as scaly leg mite also can attack the face area.

I agree...good to dust the chicken too and treat the coop then repeat in one week until all external parasites are gone. I think if they have one kind of mite maybe they have another - in my own flock.

I treat mine with 1 part antiseptic (ours it called detol) to 2 parts vegetable oil, the oil softens the scales and the detol kills the mites, I do this in the evening when they settling down for the night. You ca either rub it on or dip thier legs in the jar, by morning the are dry so the sand won't stick and the excess just soaks in to the wood perches or the shaving underneath them. This also works for my budgies.
