Hi, my chicken has developed scaly leg mites. We treated her a few weeks ago with Vaseline but not sure if it’s worked. Are there any alternative treatments? She’s a bantam so it’s a bit tricky to get the Vaseline into her legs without smearing it all over her feathery feet. :(

Scaly leg mites need to be repeatedly treated once or twice a week with vaseline for several weeks to kill the mites. Ivermectin pour on can be used at the base of the neck midline to treat mites as well. Dosage is 0.1 ml per every 2 pounds of weight, then repeat in 14 days. There is an egg withdrawal time with ivermectin.

Hi does the ivermectin work for scaly leg mites too or just ordinary mites? We got some aristopet mite and lice spray for ornamental birds from the pet shop to treat feather mites. Do you think ivermectin is a better choice?

You need to know what you are wanting to treat. Do you have SLM AND Depluming (Feather) mites?
Ivermectin will treat both scaly leg mites, depluming (feather mites), poultry lice, red mites and northern fowl mites.

Your spray *should* treat lice, red mites and northern fowl mites. Sprays are not effective against Depluming (Feather) mites and SLM
