I have a Silkie/Cochin who has had problems with scaly leg mites - I have treated her with daily bath's and vaseline. however, she has one toe that is badly twisted and swollen and she has been pecking at it and it has been bloody - she is limping and I am asking if anyone knows if it is better to remove the toe or to leave it alone - I do so love Sprout - she is so gentle and I do not want to lose her to an infection - sadly no Vet will help me out so I am dependent upon your advice here - I will carry out surgery if it is neccessary....

I desperately need help here - I cannot bear to think that she is suffering due to my not observing that she was infected with leg mites before she showed symptoms.

Many thanks for any advice

Thanks for the suggestion - I do not have neosporin - I do have "wound powder" which is an antibiotic for my horses and I also have betadine I will apply wound powder and wrap her feet also - I feel so bad that I didn't notice her feet before she showed symptoms - I am treating all of my chickens with vaseline in case they develop symptoms - I have isolated her and she is eating and drinking and acting normally, Thank you once again!

You need to keep applying the oil (vaseline, mineral oil, veg. oil, etc.) for 2 weeks daily to smother the mites, as they have a life cycle.

I personally dip with mineral oil as it is quick (the whole leg in a cup).

Scaly leg mites can affect the face also, so it is helpful to grease up the comb and wattles also.
