I have a pharoah hen that appears to have scaly leg mites. She lives indoors with her mate. Her bedding is soft and not wire. I clean it every day. She's eating and drinking however she has a limp today. I trimmed her toenails and none are missing or broken. She does not have swollen hock. Her foot appears alittle swelled and the scales are raised. I applied Vaseline but I was wondering about ivermectin. I use it for my chickens and cats. Would this work on my quail? What would the dosage be? Any ideas on how to treat the leg mites.

What's the concentration of your ivermectin?
You can get ivermectin drops that are intended for use on small birds like budgies and such. The concentration is 0.1% (1 mg/ml) and the dosage is 1 drop per 60 grams of body weight (many of the birds weigh much less than 60 grams but it's still safe to apply 1 drop). This product also comes in a 1% solution for larger animals and I suppose 1 drop of this would be the right dose for a quail.
For larger animals like sheep and cows, you can get ivermectin in higher concentrations, like 5 mg/ml or 10 mg/ml. I have used 10 mg/ml (intended for injections) on budgies applying 1 drop to the skin at the back of their neck. This is approximately 20 x overdose and the budgies were totally fine.
If she really does have leg mites, there is a very good chance the ivermectin would fix it.

Ivermectin is losing its effectiveness because people keep using it for problems that can be dealt with in other ways.
Make a mixture of 25% betadine and 75% Vaseline and smother the fowls legs in it at roost time.
Do this for three days. Leave for a week and do it for three days again.
The scales will not go back to normal until the old scales grow out and the new ones grow in.
I Vaseline the fowl that seem prone to Scaly Leg Mite as a routine now. Sure, it's a bit messy and takes a bit of time, but that's chicken keeping for you.;)
