Scaly leg mites! Need advice!

I’ve had chickens for seven years and this is my first case of mites... I’m not really sure what to do, but I noticed my rooster has been limping. I didn’t think much of it since he warded off a predator a few weeks ago and came out of it a bloody mess. I figured it was an old war wound, but after doing a google search, I decided to check his legs and just some of his scales are grey and raised on the tops of his feet.

A handful of my hens have the same thing but not as severe. So I’m assuming it’s scaly leg mites.

I pulled all the bedding out of my coop and nest boxes, threw an obscene amount of dawn in there, power washed the entire thing, and then sprayed it down with a mixture of vegetable oil, water, and more dawn.

I also have food grade DE coming in the mail. I plan on spreading that all over the run, dust bath, coop, roosts, nest boxes, as well as the chickens. I’m going to use my spray on the coop pretty much all week... Or the rest of my life.

I also sprayed the oil mixture onto their legs...

So, I guess my question is, how am I doing? How do I know when things are starting to look better, or heal? Has anyone used dawn? Would the oil, water, and soap mixture work on the coop and birds?

I’m sorry for the long post. I’m sure this has been asked multiple times on this site, but I couldnt find anything specific relating to Dawn dish soap or the oil spray. So, I figured I’d ask. Thanks!

You did the right thing by cleaning everything. Forget the DE, it wont do anything except empty your wallet or purse.
Purchase Nu-Stock at a feed store, it'll be in the Equine section. Shake the tube well and wear disposable gloves when applying it to ALL you're leg mite infected birds. Put a light coat on all roosts.
Scaly leg mites will literally eat tissue through a foot or leg.

Thank you! I’ll pick some up! Should I keep using my spray?
