The scales on my hens' feet near the nail are raised. Is this an early stage of scaly leg mites?
Pardon their dirty feet-it just rained. :)

If it is scaly leg mites, I heard you can use gasoline and A&D ointment to get rid of them. (?!)

Thanks in advance!

Hi @HomemadeLife :frow Welcome To BYC

It looks like it could be the beginning of SLM - as far as I know you can use any treatment that the Chicken Chick has recommended. She does quite a bit of research for her articles, follow the directions carefully. From what I understand the gasoline treatment is the fastest:)

Thank you! We ended up dunking their feet in oil and vinegar, alternating once each week.
Figured the gasoline has a few too many risks!

Did the oil and vinegar work? Mine have them too.
It can take a few months for the treatment to work, but here is what we're doing! About every 2 weeks, we clean our chickens feet w/ water & and old toothbrush if they're really dirty. Then we dip their legs into vinegar almost up to their feathers & leave them in for a few seconds. Then, if we have time, we dip them in veggie oil for a few more secs. Hope that helps!
We're still doing treatment, so aren't able to see if it's working yet. I've heard it can take up to a few months. But I'll keep you posted!

Figured I'd toss this out there, in case anyone could benefit... I use coconut oil cooking spray. Super easy to apply, just rub it as far into the scales as you can. It's always hard to tell if it works but I believe it has stopped it from progressing and made the skin look less inflamed.
