Scaly leg mites

Just smear petroleum jelly well on to your chickens' feet. It is best to treat all birds. You can carry a jar around with you or keep it in a convenient place and treat your birds when ever you handle them. Anyway, how many chickens do you have?

I only have 6 I handle them every evening when I put them up for the night so I can do it then easily just to be on the safe side.

Scaly leg mites defecate under the scales of your chickens' feet, this is what causes the scales to rise up. The dark lines can definitely be scaly leg mite poo beginning to ooze out. Don't take a chance, treat with petroleum jelly.

It's hard to tell by the photos, but it will not hurt one thing to put some oil or vaseline on the legs.

I would treat all. Petroleum jelly, or A&D ointment. My hens had it bad and it spreads quickly. I got spray at tractor supply. I read and tried soaking legs in warm water with flea shampoo for dogs, and I put shampoo on toothbrush and scrubbed the legs.

Two treatments treating all your birds so that there is not a reserve population of scaly leg mites will in most instances keep your flock scaly leg mite free for 6 months or more.
