How do I treat over 200 meat birds and layers for scaly leg mites? It would take forever to soak all of their feet in water and put vaseline on them, and I’m not sure if i can use ivermectin as these are meat birds ready to be butchered in a month or so and layers.

We've gone through it twice and did the vaseline the first two times. Then we doubled our flock, and when they got it again, we used the Ivermectin 5% Pour-On. It was two drops per bird (silkies) on the back of the neck, repeated in seven days.

One-week withdrawal, but hubby didn't care and ate the eggs anyway, noticing nothing different.

Welcome To BYC

Do all of them have SLM?

Can you please post photos?

If the meat birds are going to be processed, I'm not sure if I'd treat them at all. They are housed separately from the layers correct?

Do you sell eggs from the laying hens? If you do, then Ivermectin would not be a good choice to use since it's not approved for use in laying hens and you certainly would not want to sell the eggs.

Most of the layers have it, havent had a good look at the older chicks yet. The meat birds are in a different pen right beside the layers. I sell eggs from the layers and I also sell fertilized eggs for hatching.

If that's the case, then I wouldn't use medication (Ivermectin) to treat for SLM.

You will have to coat legs with an oil. SLM live under the scales of the feet and legs, so the oils/ointments will smother them. You need to repeat treatment at least once a week.
Your best bet with that many birds would be to put oil in a bucket, then take one bird at time and dip the legs into the oil.

While SLM do mainly live on the birds, they can migrate or you might find them in housing since you have so many birds, it seems that they have spread. It would be a good idea to clean out housing and treat roosting areas, nesting boxes, etc. with a Permethrin based poultry spray.

Would scaly leg mites kill the birds? I have had around 7 birds go sort of paralyzed and die a few days later, one of them had scaly leg mites. Should I just treat the ones that I can see have it, or all the birds? Also should i put vaseline on their legs?

Can you use this for all types of mites?
My understanding is at one time, this was very popular for killing worms, but somehow some types of worms became resilient to it, so Safeguard was a better choice.

But for mites, yes, all mites.

Edited this as I initially mixed up worms with mites. :old
