Hi guys!
My silkies I thought have Always had funny scales on their legs. All the other girls have had normal legs, but I noticed just today that my birds had scaly mites. Especially with all the stomping and itching they were doing. This just developed recently because quite a few of the other birds still have smooth legs.
I just wanted to see if this was a severe or moderate case, and if I was treating this correctly/could be doing something better?
Here’s my Roo’s leg.. a blurry picture. Of course he has one random long claw
(I’m going to start trimming toe claws soon, I’ve never had chickens with such lengthy things before. No idea why it’s happening… )
The first thing I did was treat the worst hen, she immediately stopped itching and stomping after treatment.
I soaked her in a warm Lavendar epsom salt bath, rubbed lavender oil over her leg, coconut oil to keep it there, and shea butter (getting something thicker like vicks tomorrow)
Then I completely cleaned out the coop. Tossed the bedding, hosed down the nesting boxes, coated Everything with permethrin(all I have on hand), put a very thin layer of bedding back down- and treated the second worst.
Tomorrow I plan on doing this bath and the whole process for Every bird I have, even rubbing it on combs- (I see the gnats are destroying my poor chooks
)
So much crusty blood around his comb… should I be adding anything to their water or feed to help them get through this???
My traumatized baby
And my grey baby
Also has anyone tried baking soda in with the coop bedding??
