Hello everyone,
We have recently acquired two hens and one is a beautiful silkie. The silkie has what we think is scaly leg. We looked on this forum and read that coating the legs in oil is a good way to suffocate the mites that cause this problem. We coated both legs yesterday with cooking oil. Today we have found that our silkie has been pecking at the scale. Some of the scale has come away which is good, but in some places where it has come away there are small open sores; as if the scale has been pulled away too soon. On one leg there is a big sore and she can't stop pecking at this now. She is making the sore worse and she is obviously unhappy. We have been thinking of making little "boots" for her with a "boot and brace" design so that she can't peck at the wound. Any suggestions as to how to help her will be very much appreciated. Thank you.
