Yeah I figured that out the hard way unfortunately, but yes they are definitely separated now and I have 8 hens sitting right now each has 14+ eggs. How many chickens per rooster is safe?

It really depends on the rooster. He will always have his favorites that he will breed more frequently. And until he perfects his technique, the hens feathers with show wear. Sometimes severe.
Most will tell you to have at least 10 hens per rooster but that ratio is actually to guarantee fertility of the hens.
 
Here are some pics the 1st one is one of the "waddles" and my lavender Orpington, can't believe I forgot to mention her. 2nd of course turken, 3rd is the other "waddles" 4th "waddles" again
