Is this bear scat? Is it possible to protect against bears?

I don't know about the scat. For bears you generally need to run some electric fencing around your coop and run. Multiple strands are best.

It looks like bear scat to me. Where do you live? (Love the socks, by the way! ☺) The best way to protect against bears is to try to prevent them from coming: remove any bird feeders or other sources of food attractants; have a dog outside at night; maybe motion-detection lights (though those don't necessarily work for bears).

I have electric wires around my coops and pens. Nothing has gotten past the wires. Bears can do a lot of damage. You need a good strong fence charger and if there is a bear around, wrap bacon around a hot wire or put peanut butter on the wire. They have a pretty thick hide so baiting is to get the bear to touch the wire with its more sensitive parts such as its nose, tongue and lips. Good luck...

Yes. HOT wire, baited with bacon to show them that this is not good place to be.
