On my hunt for hatcheries to order from in Iowa, I discovered Schlecht Hatchery's website (I live in central IL-usually quick delivery to downtown Peoria office). Their prices are excellent for meat chicks, but is limited on other breeds and sold straight run. I'm thinking of ordering meat chicks, americanas, and the white laced cornish. Anyone have any experience with them- good or bad? They seem like a pretty small business, which usually means better customer service to me. I'm not looking for show quality birds, but hardy and sound conformation are a must!

All I can say is that the name is just. . . Ominous and ironic!

With them being small and local though, it might help to get some birds from them. It's always nice to help small, new businesses.

I have ordered from them-a shared order of eggs with another guy. He had 36 eggs and I had 26 eggs. He sent me an update last week that 30 of his hatched. I had an incubator malfunction (my heating element was practically sitting on the eggs) during lockdown and only hatched 3 but 22 of mine developed fully until then.
They were exceptionally nice people to deal with.
I have not ordered chicks from them, simply because they didn't carry the breed I was after, so I can't vouch for the chicks but the other guy who has the 30 buff orpingtons said they are really nice healthy chicks.

I have ordered white mallard ducklings from them, twice. They are kinda small, as they told me only 8 hatched out, and had to substitute 2 of another breed. But they are nice and easy to deal with. I had 2 good experiences with them. I would recommend them for small orders.
