Chickens are omnivores as you know. So, nature has dictated that they need a diet balanced for ominvores: not too much protein but enough.
The source of the protein is important because in places like the South cotton seed meal is sometimes utilized. Be aware of Gossypium Poisoning.
Most of us are feeding between 15-20% protein.
I personally feed fully mature cocks 4 oz. of 15% protein feed once a day. That is all they need to be healthy and live long.
