Would it hatch underwater?

And once the bloom is washed off the egg - the chick is dust. So the moment it hits the water.
Not true. I’ve always heard that as well but I’ve hatched washed eggs before both intentionally and unintentionally and they all hatched perfectly fine. In fact, I even had a 100% hatch once with a mix of some washed and some not. Now, granted, they weren’t like drenched in water or scrubbed or anything... just poop wiped off with a wet paper towel but still. They hatched fine.

Now, I’m not saying it’s not a good idea to try to protect the bloom or anything, it is, but it’s definitely not true that the chicks are automatically “dust” as you say if you wash them. I and several others have hatched washed eggs and even most if not all hatcheries wash their eggs or at least sanitize them.

People even hatch refrigerated eggs which are supposed to never be able to hatch. There aren’t really any hard and fast, true 100% of the time, rules with hatching. Except maybe that the chicks will die if you hatch underwater. That one is true.

I hatch washed eggs all the time. Well, washed, & refrigerated eggs. My hatch rate is 96% - 100% with them.

Yup! It can definitely be done with quite a lot of success! I was shocked when I learned that 😂

People even get fertilized eggs from the store, like Trader Joe’s, which are who knows how old plus refrigerated, and have success! Now, granted, with those it’s not a ton of success, usually only a couple chicks if that, but still. It can be done.

Our Walmart carries some fertilized eggs, so I can probably experiment with those some day.

I know, it's surprising.

They're free ranged, so they're most likely fertilized. Happy Egg also sells Heritage Breed eggs, which includes blue layers, but my Walmart doesn't sell the Heritage breed ones yet.
