Check to see if there is a ReStore in your area. It's a second-hand shop for all sorts of building materials & home improvement needs, run by & benefitting Habitat for Humanity.

Also, look for a FreeCycle group in your area, check http://www.FreeCycle.org It's an online bulletin board to offer & request all sorts of things for free.

I told everyone I knew my plans to build a coop using salvaged materials. I had all sorts of stuff as a result from friends and neighbors.

One neighbor had old parts that he says can make an automatic pop door opener for me since mine has an up and down sliding door.

I also got stuff off craigslist and habitat for humanity Restore for both the coop and tractor. You never know what you will find. The only down side is, it usually isn't like going to Lowes and getting it all at once. It took a month or so to get the majority of what I needed. Then I still didn't find it all and had to buy some things.

I ran into a friendly man who rents his houses out and he had several pieces of wood that I used. Yes some was in pretty bad shape, IT'S FREE can't complain. Some pieces came from Lowe's. I'm finding that Home Depo has a clearence area pay $.50 - $1.00 for some of there wood.
