.My Black Australorps are exactly one month old. How old should they be before I give them food scraps and veggies??
They are racing around their pen grabbing every bug that moves so I figured it might be a good time to expand their gourmet choices

A little bit is fine (just don't over do it they are a little young to be eating anything but chick feed), but if they are getting something other than chick feed you should also have grit available for them.

My 3 week olds are catching bugs too, and we've given them a little tomato and watermelon. Is taking them outside to peck around in the dirt each day enough grit for them or do I need to buy something to supplement their diet?

as long as they have grit you can give them a large variety of treats, I've always started at a week and I've never had a problem. Treats are an occasional thing though, so try not to over do it... I know, it's fun feeding them by hand and watching them zip around snatching up the treats :) but you don't want to over do it.

Thanks for all the replies. I put out grit and seashell for them, but they aren't interested yet. I also hung a cabbage, but they haven't touched that yet either. I'll wait another couple of weeks before giving them the commercial treats. My girls are so big and healthy and really enjoy the Taj Mahal I built for them.
